In the African American Hoodoo tradition, personal concerns and symbolic figures have long been used to focus prayer, intention, and spiritual work. In this hands-on class, students will learn how to create a traditional cloth spirit doll used for protection, healing, love, prosperity, and ancestral connection.
Participants will sew and build their own cloth doll while learning the traditional ideas behind sympathetic magic — the old-school principle that “like affects like.” You’ll be guided through how to spiritually prepare your doll, how to add herbs, roots, curios, and personal concerns, and how to pray over and work with it once it’s complete.
This class blends craft, culture, and conjure. By the end of the workshop, you’ll leave with a completed doll and the knowledge of how to continue working with it as a spiritual ally.
In this class we will cover:
The role of spirit dolls and poppets in Hoodoo tradition
Choosing the right intention for your doll
Sewing and stuffing a traditional cloth doll
Adding herbs, roots, and curios for specific work
Dressing, naming, and spiritually activating the doll
How to pray over and maintain your doll
All basic materials will be provided, but students are encouraged to bring a personal concern if they wish to personalize their work (such as a photo, written petition, hair, or small meaningful item).
No sewing experience required — if you can thread a needle, you can do this.
Come ready to create, learn, and put your hands into some real conjure.
